Inula racemosa (Inula magnifica, Inula helenium)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Common names: Pushkarmool, Indian Elecampane<\/strong><\/p>\n

Number of seeds in packet: 30+<\/strong><\/p>\n

A super, robust, tall perennial.<\/p>\n

This tough, reliable, western Himalayan plant is the tallest Inula,\u00a0growing up to 2.4m (8 feet),\u00a0and quickly makes decent clumps.<\/p>\n

Stout stems should need no staking in good soil in sun.\u00a0The stems and leaves are hairy.<\/p>\n

The lower, pale green leaves can be almost 90cm (3ft) long and up to a foot wide,\u00a0making a feature on their own before the plant comes into flower.<\/p>\n

Small, daisy-like yellow flowers on top of strong stems appear from the end of\u00a0summer into the middle of autumn. Great for butterflies!<\/p>\n

Tolerant of most soils and regularly gets flooded at the bottom of my garden!<\/p>\n

Suitable for planting at the back of a border.<\/p>\n

Great with spiky-leaved plants and \u201chot\u201d colours, such as canna lilies,\u00a0or in a wild meadow or prairie-style garden.<\/p>\n

You can also plant it as a specimen behind a pond where both foliage and flowers can be seen,\u00a0or grow behind much shorter, moisture-loving plants in the centre of a damp border.<\/p>\n

Monks cultivated it throughout the Middle Ages and brewed tea from the roots, to soothe their sore throats.<\/p>\n

Inula Racemosa is one of the most commonly used holistic treatments\u00a0in Ayurvedic medicine, India\u2019s traditional form of medicine.<\/p>\n

When in flower there is a beehive of activity around the plant, as insects love the flowers.<\/p>\n

Another special time is in late summer and autumn, when the tall flower stalks become a natural birdfeeder.<\/p>\n

Should NOT need staking, but needs full sun.<\/p>\n
